ASKfm Redesigns Mobile App on iOS, Android

ASKfm has released a major update for its app on iOS and Android. The Q&A platform allows users to send questions to other users to answer within the app, with Version 3.0 including a visual redesign of the platform, among other additions. ASKfm has redesigned the app to offer a more ‘youthful feel’ for its core user base of teens and Millennials, and has also given the platform a new mascot: OwlCat.

In addition, the app now has Giphy integration, allowing users to search for GIFs to add to their question responses. Users can also double tap to like or unlike any post, can customize their profile by adding a photo to the banner behind their profile and can share posts and profiles with others via text messages.

Thanks to an integration with Collab, a partner platform for Vine creators, the ASKfm ‘Question of the Day’ feature will soon be ‘programmed' by a selection of Vine stars, including Rickey Thompson, DSharp and Marcus Perez. Elsewhere, a new ‘Grab n’ Ask’ feature will allow users to share questions they find with their friends.

In a statement, Andrea Cutright, COO of ASKfm, commented:

Young people on ASKfm show incredible engagement—the bulk of the 18 billion questions asked over the past year were answered within a minute. We saw an opportunity to dramatically evolve the ASKfm experience to foster the instantaneous communication, creativity and connection that reflects how our users view the platform.

The new version of ASKfm is available to download for free on the iTunes App Store and Google Play.

Report: 60% of Users Unwilling to Vacation Without Mobile Device

Expedia and Egencia, Expedia’s business travel brand, have revealed the results of the Expedia / Egencia Mobile Index, which measured the behaviors and preferences of mobile users while traveling. The study was conducted by Northstar, and gathered data from 9,642 travelers from 19 countries.

The study found travelers now consider their mobile device the ‘single most indispensable’ item they take with them when traveling, rating it higher than their toothbrush, deodorant and driver’s license. Specifically, 94 percent of respondents in both China and Taiwan said their smartphone was ‘an important travel companion,’ followed by respondents from Thailand at 91 percent.

The report found users will continue to use their devices even while on vacation, with more than half of respondents saying they would feel ‘lost’ without their mobile device while on vacation, and 60 percent saying they would be unwilling to go on vacation without a mobile device. In addition, 35 percent of users said they use their mobile device more while on vacation than they do while at home.

The study also focused on offensive smartphone behaviors, and showed 58 percent of users find ‘playing music, games or videos without headphones’ to be the most offensive mobile behavior. This is an increase of more than 10 percent from 2014. This was followed by ‘making or taking calls while on speakerphone,’ which offends 57 percent of users (up four percent from 2014), and ‘taking photos or videos of strangers,’ which is offensive to 48 percent of respondents (up from 42 percent in 2014).

In a statement, Aman Bhutani, president of Brand Expedia Group, commented:

We have found that travelers are using mobile devices at every stage of the travel process, from researching and booking trips to capturing and sharing the travel experience. And just because a traveler can use their device to read work email and stay connected to the office, they also believe it improves the quality of their vacations. Consumers tell us what they do and don’t like in their mobile offerings and habits, and we’ve been listening and steadily adapting to provide what the mobile-savvy travelers demand.

PCs face historic decline during holiday quarter

Shipments of personal computers fell 10.6% during the fourth quarter to 71.9 million units, the largest year-over-year decline in PC sales on record, according to industry tracker IDC. The data offers the latest evidence of dismal holiday sales for personal computers, with Gartner earlier on Tuesday reporting an 8.3% decline in the fourth quarter. Total shipments for the year dipped below 300 million units for the first time since 2008. The market contracted by 4.3% in the U.S., where IDC says the introduction of higher-end detachable tablets, such as Apple Inc.'s iPad Pro, cannibalized some demand for traditional PCs. Matching Gartner's data, IDC's data also shows a year-over-year decline in PC shipments for market leaders Lenovo, HP Inc. and Dell, while Apple stood as the lone winner.

This Stock Has A 12.33% Yield, Sells For Less Than Book, and Insiders Have Been Buying

In this series, we look through the most recent Dividend Channel ''DividendRank'' report, and then we cherry pick only those companies that have experienced insider buying within the past six months. The officers and directors of a company tend to have a unique insider's view of the business, and presumably the only reason an insider would choose to take their hard-earned cash and use it to buy stock in the open market, is that they expect to make money — maybe they find the stock very undervalued, or maybe they see exciting progress within the company, or maybe both. So when stocks turn up that see insider buying, and are also top ranked, investors are wise to take notice. One such company is Fifth Street Finance Corporation (NASD: FSC), which saw buying by Director James Castro-blanco.
